Research

The Treating Emotion and Motivational Processes Transdiagnostically (TEMPT) lab studies emotion and self-regulation processes that underlie clinical symptoms and syndromes.  Much or our research is focused on basic processes (e.g., what are common self-control temptation scenarios? How do beliefs about emotion influence people’s emotional choices and symptoms?  How does the ability to tolerate emotional distress contribute to emotion regulation and self-regulation difficulties), but with the aim of better understanding the kinds of problems people talk about in psychotherapy. TEMPT lab members are  interested in how emotion and motivational processes influence a variety dysregulated behaviors often associated with impulsivity (smoking, drinking alcohol, drug use, overeating , and non-suicidal self-injury) and also tendencies to avoid or withdraw typically seen in anxiety and depression. We are truly transdiagnostic–we care more about the processes and functions that contribute to people’s patterns of thinking and actions than to any one diagnostic category.

Please see our Research Projects page for information on our current projects, and the Publications and Presentations pages for our dissemination efforts.  We also maintain a brief page about the measures and tasks developed by Dr. Veilleux and other lab members.
